Frequently asked questions

Straight answers for Canadian households hiring nannies, caregivers, and other domestic employees—before you dive into remittances and provincial rules.

Do I need a CRA business number to hire a caregiver or nanny?

If you employ a nanny or caregiver and pay them as an employee, you generally need a CRA payroll program account to withhold CPP, EI, and income tax and send remittances on schedule. That is different from “running a business” in the retail sense—household employers register for payroll because CRA treats you as an employer. RoostPay has a built-in CRA registration wizard to quickly register your for a CRA Business Number.

How do I pay a household employee legally in Canada?

You establish a real employment relationship, pay wages through payroll (not casual “cash under the table”), withhold the correct statutory deductions, and remit them to CRA on time. You also keep pay records and hours, issue pay stubs, and file a T4 after year-end—provincial employment standards still apply to domestic staff. RoostPay automates calculations, remittance tracking, and year-end documents so your household payroll follows a clear, defensible process.

Do I have to calculate sick pay and vacation for domestic staff?

Yes—provincial employment standards set minimum vacation pay and other entitlements, and many provinces also have job-protected or paid sick or family-responsibility leave rules that depend on tenure and employer size. Your contract and province determine what you must track, pay, and document for caregivers in your home. RoostPay uses provincial profiles to automatically track overtime, vacation, and related entitlements instead of guessing from a generic template.

Is RoostPay a good alternative to manual payroll spreadsheets?

Spreadsheets handle arithmetic, but they rarely keep pace with changing CRA schedules, TD1s, and provincial overtime and holiday rules—especially when you need an audit trail months later. RoostPay replaces brittle formulas with structured pay runs, app-based time tracking, and CRA-aligned reporting. You spend less time maintaining cells and more time on your family, while keeping records that look intentional rather than improvised.
